What's going on up there

If you're hearing them at 5am, there's a good chance they've moved in.

The gap under a solar array is dry, shaded and out of reach of predators. To a pigeon, that's real estate. Once they're in, you get:

  • Scratching and cooing above the bedroom, early
  • Droppings on the roof, gutters, driveway, patio and car
  • Twigs and feathers washing into the gutters
  • Birds that come straight back after you clear a nest

How we fix it

We clean up the mess. Then stop them getting back in.

  1. 1

    Inspect

We look at the array, the gaps and how to get on the roof safely.

  2. 2

    Assess the birds

Any birds or nesting are assessed first. Wildlife laws apply.

  3. 3

    Clean up

Accessible nesting and droppings cleared where permitted, and the area cleaned and sanitised.

  4. 4

    Install the mesh

Cut to size, clipped on without drilling, corners fixed together.

  5. 5

    Final check

We go around the whole array before we pack up.

Wildlife laws

Bird exclusion and nest-removal work is subject to applicable Queensland wildlife laws. Protected native wildlife and active breeding places may require specific management or approvals. Where necessary, work may be postponed or referred to an appropriately authorised wildlife professional.

Before & after

From nesting spot to closed-off array.

Mesh goes around the edges, not across the glass. Black epoxy coating, so it sits in with the frames.

Heat, wet season, salt air. The mesh has to cope.

Townsville roofs bake in the sun, get hammered in the wet season and, closer to the coast, cop salt-laden air. That's why we use 304 stainless-steel mesh with a black epoxy coating, selected for outdoor durability.

Every roof is different, with different profiles, pitches and gaps under the panels. The mesh is cut to suit your actual array, not a kit size.

    FAQ

Questions We Get Asked a Lot

How much does solar panel bird proofing cost?

Every job is quoted individually. The price depends mainly on the length of exposed panel perimeter, plus the panel layout, number of arrays, roof height, access and pitch, and how much nesting and clean-up there is. See what affects the price. Quotes are free and there's no obligation.

Will the mesh damage my solar panels?

The mesh is cut to size and secured with clips that are installed without drilling, in line with manufacturer guidelines. We don't do electrical work. If a job would ever need panels moved or the system disconnected, that requires a licensed electrician, and we'll tell you before anything is booked.

Can pigeons get back under the panels after bird proofing?

When it's properly fitted, the mesh physically blocks access to the gap around the protected array. We cut it to size, clip it on and fix the corners together, then check it before we finish. It's worth keeping an eye on any roof work over time, and if you ever notice birds getting under again, let us know.

What happens to the pigeons after the panels are meshed?

With the gap closed off, they have to look for somewhere else. Mesh is never installed in a way that traps birds underneath. Any birds or nesting are assessed first.

Can you remove a nest from beneath my solar panels?

It depends on the bird species and whether the nest is an active breeding place. Queensland wildlife protections may apply, so the situation is assessed before any removal or exclusion work proceeds. Feral pigeons are an introduced species; native birds and their active breeding places can be protected. Where necessary, work may be postponed or referred to an appropriately authorised wildlife professional.

How long does bird proofing take?

It depends on the size and layout of the array, roof access and how much clean-up is needed. We'll give you a time estimate with your quote.

Can I send a photo instead of booking an inspection?

Yes. Upload a photo with your quote request or send one by email. It helps us understand the panel layout and what's going on.

Can you clean my solar panels at the same time?

Yes. Panel cleaning is a separate service by Cleanest Solar and can be quoted at the same time. Tick the box on the quote form.
