Idalia, including Fairfield Waters, is built right beside one of Townsville's notable bird habitats. Townsville City Council describes the Fairfield freshwater wetland as hosting an amazing array of dry-season ducks, geese, herons, cormorants and even pelicans.
The bird proofing problem on nearby homes is a different one. Adaptable urban birds such as pigeons take advantage of sheltered spaces around buildings, and solar panels create one of those spaces whenever the perimeter is left open.

Wetland Birds vs Nuisance Birds
The waterbirds at the wetland aren't the ones nesting under your panels. Bird proofing doesn't affect them at all. It simply closes off the gap under your solar array so pigeons can't use it, leaving the wetland birds exactly where they belong.
From Light Industry to Fairfield Waters
Idalia takes its name from an ancient river of Cyprus and was first developed by the Idalia Estate Land Company. It was once a light-industrial suburb. That changed with the Fairfield Waters subdivision, a master-planned estate beside the Ross River. At the 2021 Census Idalia had 4,563 residents in 1,798 private dwellings, with a median age of 32.
Check Your Roof from the Ground
You can rule a lot in or out without a ladder:
- Stand back far enough to see the edges of the array
- Look for any open gap under the panels, and twigs or feathers sticking out
- Check the gutter line and eaves below the panels for droppings
- Listen early in the morning for cooing or scratching on the roof
How We Do It in Idalia
The method doesn't change from suburb to suburb: we assess the array and any birds first, clear accessible nesting where permitted, then fit 304 stainless-steel mesh that's cut to size, clipped on without drilling and fixed at the corners. What changes is your roof, so every Idalia quote is based on your actual panel layout. What affects the price.
Bird and nest management is subject to applicable Queensland wildlife laws. Panel cleaning is a separate service.
Idalia Bird Proofing Questions
Will the mesh be noticeable from the street?
The mesh is black, so it sits in with the panel frames and is usually hard to pick out from the ground. It's cut to size so it follows the edge of the array neatly.
How soon should I act once I notice pigeons?
Sooner is usually easier. Once a pair starts nesting, droppings and nesting material build up, and there may be eggs or chicks, which changes what can be done straight away.
How do I know if birds are under my panels?
Common signs are cooing or scratching early in the morning, droppings on the roof edge, driveway or outdoor areas, twigs and feathers in the gutters, and birds disappearing under the panels.
