Solar panel bird proofing across Townsville

Why pigeons pick solar panels

The space between a solar array and the roof is shaded, dry and hard for predators to reach. For feral pigeons, which naturally roost and nest on ledges and in cavities, it's an ideal spot. Once they settle in, they tend to keep returning to the same place.

What doesn't work for long

  • Just removing the nest. The gap is still open, so birds can come straight back.
  • Scare devices such as fake owls or reflective tape. Birds often get used to them.
  • Hosing out the gap. It moves the mess around but doesn't stop the birds getting back in.

What does work: physical exclusion

The reliable fix is to block access to the gap with a physical barrier around the edge of the array. That's what solar panel bird mesh does. It's how the Cleanest Solar team approaches bird proofing: we cut 304 stainless-steel mesh with a black epoxy coating to size, clip it on without drilling, and fix the corners together so there's no open join.

The right order to do it in

  • Check what's there first. If birds or nests are present, the situation needs to be assessed. Native birds and active breeding places can be protected under Queensland law.
  • Clear accessible nesting and debris where permitted, and clean the affected area. If droppings have built up on the glass as well, panel cleaning can be quoted for the same visit.
  • Then fit the mesh around the whole perimeter. Never install mesh in a way that traps birds underneath.

Bird and nest management is subject to applicable Queensland wildlife laws. Protected native wildlife and active breeding places may require specific management or approvals.

Should you do it yourself?

It means working on a roof around live solar equipment, handling droppings and nesting material, and making sure every exposed edge is covered. Miss one side and birds can still get in. If you'd rather have it done properly, send us a quote request with a photo of your roof.
